Balrothery Co Op Meeting

You are invited to a 'townhall' type meeting on January 25th at 8pm in the Heritage Centre to discuss
establishing the ABCD Co Op.Association for Balrothery Community Development( ABCD Co Op ) which will be a business owned by the community through open membership based on the 7
principles of Cooperatives. It will be focused on developing the Balrothery ‘brand’ as a premium
Tourism/Heritage location and local art/craft supplier. By being a community owned and operated
brand, business stays local and profits stay in the village. ABCD Co-Op will facilitate the potential for
grant/funding applications from Rural Leader and other avenues.

If you support this proposal but can’t make this meeting, you can send
your name, email and text number to mrgaryrutherford@gmail.com to register your support in
advance.
I believe such a Co-Op is the best vehicle to drive a targeted campaign and bring about the
coordinated improvement of our village as an amenity for ourselves and our potential visitors.

Gormanston & District Anglers

Gormanston & District Anglers Fishery is presently closed for fishing. The Delvin re-opens for fishing on Sunday the 6^th of march with our traditional "all legal means" fishing competition for members, which begins at 2pm. Meeting at the bridge on the Delvin river ( on the R132 ) Gormanston at 1.30 pm.

The Wavin Lake which is closed for essential maintenance at present will re-open for fishing on St Patricks Day (17^th of March) at 9am with a fly and spin competition for all members.

We welcome new members and will be accepting fees for renewal of membership or if anyone wants to join the club on these two dates.

Gormanston & District Anglers open to new and lapsed members

A very well attended Gormanston and District Anglers AGM was held on the 18^th of January in The Balrothery Heritage Centre. Ray Mooney club chairman (pictured) addressed the meeting and reported that even though the club had an excellent year with our lake fishing extremely well and number of our juniors getting International recognition and senior male and female anglers doing well in Provincial and National competitions. The membership of the club was down on previous years. The G D & A was no different than every other club and organization in Ireland and were presently suffering because of the economic downturn and emigration.

It was therefore decided at the AGM not to increase the 2011 renewal fees and to maintain them at 2010 levels.

It was also decided to introduce a new family membership which allows one senior and as many juniors for a set fee of €160.00 per year

Also due to falling membership arising from emigration and the downturn in the economy, that an amnesty for lapsed senior members would be introduced. This amnesty would be available until the 31-3-2011.This amnesty would basically allow lapsed members to rejoin the club, regardless of how many years they had not renewed their senior membership fees. Lapsed members would be reinstated as full members with a once off payment of €30.00 plus this year's renewal fee of €100.00. This does not apply to juniors/disabled and OAP, who only have to pay the present renewal fee.

The AGM also decided to reduce the new membership fee by €55.00 to encourage more uptake.

The club are also very happy to announce that the new 2011 " Last Man Standing " promotion will be starting soon with a prize fund of €300 for the winner again details can be found on club website

The competition is open to all junior members of the club and is sponsored by Robert Kenny, Club President and Stanic Fly Casting tutor

Entrance fee for competitors is €2.00 per angler

Robert Kenny is also on hand on the day to provide a free fly casting clinic to all members of the club, junior, senior and oaps.

The next senior competition and final competition for Angler of the Year is on Sunday the 12^th of September. Entrance fee is €5.00 per Angler.

We would also like to thank everyone who showed up on the Lake for our St Patrick’s day competitions. We had over 100 visitors on the day.

57 senior anglers competed in the Michael Barrable Motor’s sponsored senior competition with the largest fish weighing in at nearly 4lbs.

18 Junior anglers also competed in their own competition with the largest fish weighing in 1.14oz.

Over 60 fish were caught on the day with most being returned to fight another day

Youth Needs in Balrothery

Do you have teenagers that constantly complain of having nothing to do? Are you tired of not knowing if
your son or daughter is socialising safely? Would you be happier to know that there was somewhere
they could go to meet with their friends in a safe and supervised space. Foróige can assist in providing
such a place for young people aged 12 and over.

The Foróige club in Balrothery has run successfully for the past two years. It provides a place for
young people to socialise in a safe environment and get involved in fun activities. The club allows
young people get involved in organising their own activities and gives them the opportunity to
achieve for themselves. The club helps young people gain valuable skills and gives them the chance to
grow in confidence.

The club relies on adults from the community to volunteer their time to assist them in running
the club. Without help and support of adults the club cannot exist. Unfortunately, the club does not
have enough volunteers and therefore can no longer continue. We urgently need more adults from the
area that would be willing to give an hour of their time on a Wednesday evening to keep the club open.
The club is not only for young people, says Bryan Gavin, Youth Officer with Foróige. Adults can also gain
a lot from being involved. Not only are you helping the young people, it is also a great way for you to get
involved in your community, meet new people and give something back. Don’t wait for others to do it,
everyone has something to offer. If you are interested in finding out more, then come along to our
information meeting on Wednesday 1st April at 8pm in the Heritage Centre, Balrothery. Further

Gormanston Anglers

The Wavin Lake will be closed on 1st of March for essential works & re-stocking. We will be re-opening on the 17th of March St Patricks day.

There will be a senior competition and junior competition on the day, and the prize for the heaviest junior fish will be a fly starter kit. The prize for heaviest senior fish will be a fly rod valued at €150. The competitions are fly and spin ( no boats ). Entrance fee for senior members €5.00, Juniors are free.
The club have issued an invitation to Balrothery National School to come to the lake on Friday the 6th of March for a field trip. Over 60 kids and teachers will be taking part. This will be at 1pm and we would like as many members that are available to come up and help us on the day. Anyone else that is interested in joining in on this educational visit should contact rayban@indigo.ie

The Delvin River re-opens on the 1st of March and the G D & A will be holding our first competition of the 2009 season on the Delvin on Sunday the 8th. All legal means allowed. The competition begins at 2pm and will run for 2 hours. Meeting at the pool from 1.30pm.

The committee have set a target of May 2009 for the new boathouse, obviously this is dependant on the membership we receive. In next 2 months the club will have 2 x stocks completed of large +2 year old fish into the lake. We also intend to run the Easter junior competition as normal with Easter eggs for all junior members who show up, date to be announced.

Balrothery Foróige Club needs adult volunteers to help run the youth
club in the area.
The club has been running for the past three years and has been a
great success.
The club provides a safe environment for young people aged 12 and
over to meet and get involved in fun activities and games. The club meets on Wednesdays from 8-9.30 in the Heritage centre. If you are aged 18 or over and would have a hour to spare once a week, please come along to a meeting in Balrothery Heritage Centre on Wednesday 19th November at 8pm.

Without the support of the local community the Foróige club will not be
able to reopen.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PART OF ROSEPARK ROAD, BALROTHERY

The Transportation Department proposes to temporarily close part of Rosepark Road, Balrothery to through traffic which runs from the junction of Balrothery Road to the junction with the Cross of the Cage Road from 8.00 a.m. on Tuesday, 30^th September, 2008 to 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday, 21^st October, 2008 inclusive in order that necessary road resurfacing works can be undertaken on part of this road by Kilsaran, who are Contractors engaged by Fingal County Council to undertake this work.

While the stretch of road in question is temporarily closed the alternative route for motorised traffic will be as follows:

Travelling northwards from Killalane direction to Balrothery will be as follows:

Turn left on to New Lane, turn right on to the ‘Man of War’- Balrothery Road

Travelling southwards from Balrothery will be as follows:

Turn right on to the ‘Man of War’- Balrothery Road, turn left on to New Lane

Traffic travelling from the junction of the ‘Cross of the Cage’

Turn left on to the Killalane Road, turn right on to New Lane, turn right on to the ‘Man of War’- Balrothery Road

Local access will be maintained at all times and diversion signs will be in place.

Any interested person may lodge an objection in writing with the Senior Engineer, Transportation Department, Fingal County Council, Grove Road, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15 not later than 5.00 p.m. on Friday, 12^th September 2008.

Tidy Towns Meetings February 2008

Many thanks to all who attended and also to those who offered their future support.

From our discussions we have listed our main objectives for 2008.

Tidy Town Survey: We will carry out a survey of the village on Saturday 1st of March at 12:00 noon. Itemising a comprehensive list of issues that will need addressing.
Fundraising: Will arrange an envelope collection in mid March. This proved successful in the past and provided much needed funds for projects, flower planting/tubs, waste collection etc. We will need more helpers in the village to deliver envelopes and then a few days later to collect hem. By having representatives in each of the Estates and Roads would greatly assist with this.
National Spring Clean Day: Ireland’s most popular, well recognised and successful anti-litter initiative. Now in its tenth year, the campaign encourages every sector of society to actively participate and take responsibility for litter. In early April we will be arranging our village clean up day. We hope to get as much support as possible, many hands make light work.
Tidy Towns Competition: We will be entering the 2008 Tidy towns Competition now in it’s 50^th year. Due to the housing developments of the past few year it seemed pointless for Balrothery to entry, but with a bit of work and community support we can at least set down the bench mark for future years starting this year.
Building Awareness: We represent the community and it is important that we keep the community up to date with our plans and news. We will be providing a newsletter posted around the village and in Dave’s shop and also through our local website www.balrothery.com. We will be supporting and promoting awareness of anti litter/ anti dog fowling campaigns etc. throughout the village and school in conjunction with Fingal County Council Environmental Section. We will be working closely together with Balrothery Heritage, The Community Council and local businesses supporting each other on local issues.

We are looking forward to a busy year and with good support from our local Community we can achieve a good level of success. Let’s have a cleaner, tidier village that we can all take even more pride in for 2008.

The Balrothery Foróige Youth Club will reopen on Wednesday 17^th October in The Heritage Centre at 8pm. The club is aimed at young people aged 12 years and over. If your child would like to become a member please bring them along on the night. The club opened in August 2006 and has been involved in various activities throughout the year. The club is run by the members in partnership with adult volunteers. The young people plan and organise activities and games from their own interests. Last year the members planned and organised an Easter party for young children from the area. This was a great success and brought the community together.

Adults Volunteers Required:

The club urgently requires adult volunteers to help out in the club. The club can not continue without the support and help of adults from the area. If you can spare a hour on a Wednesday evening and would like to give something back to the community of Balrothery, please contact Bryan Gavin, Regional Youth Officer @ 086 8519639 or 01 6301560. Without your help the club will not be able to stay open.

Balrothery Tidy Towns News

Balrothery Village has had a Tidy Towns Committee since 1996, but unfortunately due to lack of interest this has dwindled down to now three members, who twice a year replant the tubs at both entrances to the village and try to keep their own space litter free.

At the open meeting recently in the Heritage Centre, a few people put their names forward for Tidy Towns which is much appreciated, but to make this venture successful we would need at least two people from every road and estate helping to allow us to work more efficiently.

We had great success in the past with our School winning first prize, also the shops in the village and of course The Balrothery Inn. We also ran garden competitions and many of our residents won prizes over the years.

We stopped entering the Tidy Towns annual competition due to the ongoing building in progress and the disruption this causes. As it is expensive to enter, we didn't see the point as no allowances are made for ongoing work.

We also had a voluntary envelope system to raise funds, as you will appreciate to make improvements to the village requires funding, so we would hope to operate this system again providing we can get enough volunteers to commit their time to this project. With the re-establishment of The Balrothery Community Council, in time, should also assist with improvements to the village roads, footpaths, litter bins and green areas etc.

We have a lovely village with great history and lovely surroundings, please help us to make it a more beautiful place to live and be proud to be part of.

Parks Tennis 2007 programme

A Tennis Coaching programme takes place this Summer at various venues around the country. It caters for boys and girls between 6 and l7 years. Hourly classes are divided according to age and standard.
This is a low cost programme subsidised by various sponsors. The only cost is a small once off registration fee - and that's it.. All equipment supplied, racquets and balls - Free T-shirts for all.
Children ! Come and enjoy this fun programme with your friends while learning tennis. Dates and times vary according to locations but are mostly during July or August.
